Weekly Photo Challenge: It is Easy Being Green!

Barney the Bloody Nosed Beetle

Saw Betty, his latest sweetheart

He said, “Shall we meet by the nettles

And give our passion a little jumpstart?”

IMG_0877

You see they’d recently grown distant

A coolness had entered their lives

But now with the Spring that was springing

Perhaps their love would survive

They met when they were just larvae

And love was new and sweet

Hanging around on green sticky weed

While their hearts used to skip a beat

Bethy look over at Barney

Her heart softened a little

“Is there sticky weed too?” she asked

Whilst trying to be noncommittal!

This story has a nice, happy ending

Their love was rekindled that day

And if you just don’t believe me

Here’s proof that it’s true what I say!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Edge

Barney the Bloody-Nosed Beetle’s bad day on the Edge!

img_9399

Barney the Bloody-Nosed Beetle

Found himself one day on a stick!

He thought it quite uncomfortable

And decided to leave pretty quick!

Sadly he lost his footing

And there in front of the hedge

He slipped and skidded all over the place

And nearly fell off the edge!

img_9400

‘Twas a day of very good fortune

And Barney soon got himself straight

He there and then decided

That climbing sticks really wasn’t that great!

Bloody Nosed Beetle Larva

I have been off the blogging scene for a while as we have moved house-to another beautiful place where we are surrounded by countryside, very English countryside.

I found this little fellow early one morning and he made me very excited as I have been looking for one of these for a few years now! In case you missed in the title of the blog…..he’s a Bloody Nosed Beetle larva!

I love his shape, colour, curliness and feet!

IMG_8383

So I have taken lots of photos!

IMG_8385

The Bloody Nosed Beetle gets its name because when frightened it produces a bright red liquid from its mouth!

IMG_8387

Naturally this bright red liquid is foul tasting thus putting off predators!

If you follow the link at the end of this blog you will see what wonderful feet the adult Bloody Nosed Beetle has……well I think so!

Meet Peter the Pondskater

IMG_7773

This next little chap is not quite as successful…I fear I might have snapped him not long before he went under.

Bernie Beetle loved Peter Pondskater and wanted to emulate him in every way….not always successfully!

Weekly Photo Challenge: (Extra)ordinary and Macro Monday!

Whilst out for a walk I saw this little chap on the ground. “Oh,” I thought, “an ordinary beetle!”

But on second rather harder looking I saw that he was a rather Extraordinary beetle!!

He is a Violet Ground Beetle. If you look closely you can see they are black with a metallic purple sheen, especially around the flattened edges of its fused wing cases!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Creepy

Now, I don’t often take a creepy photo and I don’t think beetles are creepy! But when we got home last night, this little fella was jiggin’ and whizzin’ around on the doorstep and quite made us jump!

I also didn't get my lighting quite right!

I decided that I had  to pop him the right way up….and here he is!

I think I'm going to have to try harder to take creepy photos!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Vivid

Yep! I think I can do vivid!

These beetles are called….Eulasia Papaveris…..or it may be that they are of the family Eulasia Papaveris….I’m not sure but it took me ages to find out what they were and there’s not much information on them. I can tell you these photos were taken in Southern Turkey in Tlos which is quite near to Fethiye. But that’s about it. I think they are amazingly vivid!

These little chaps were hustling and bustling on this poppy as if their lives depended on it!
