The Case of the Mysterious Floating Moorhens!

Today I have some photos that I took this week on Marsworth reservoir. They are a little strange to my eyes but I rather like them!

These waterfowl (always sounds a bit unpleasant…..’waterfowl’ eh?) are called Moorhens but we used to call them dabchicks-however I can find no reference to dabchicks being another name for moorhens on the internet!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Treasure 4

Something I treasure highly are wildlife photos, especially river birds…..

Meet Mildred Moorhen…full frontal!

Meet Mildred Moorhen…full frontal!

Mildred on her best side!

Mildred on her best side and full of chat!

Poor Mildred….innocently pecking around on the canal edge, minding her own business, when who should shatter her reverie……

None other than moi and mon camera!

"Erk! Run for the hills, run for the hills!" shrieked Mildred, of course meaning 'Run for the water' in reality!

“Erk! Run for the hills, run for the hills!” shrieked Mildred, of course meaning ‘Run for the water’ in reality!

What follows is a series of photos of Mildred leaping into the canal!

"Have to jump, have to jump" thought Mildred in somewhat of a panic!

“Have to jump, have to jump” thought Mildred in something of a panic!

"Right, definitely after three….one, two…."

“Right, definitely after three….one, two….”

"Threeeeeeeeeeeee!"

“Threeeeeeeeeeeee!”

"Damn it!" gurgled Mildred, "That bank was higher than I thought!"

“Damn it!” gurgled Mildred, “That bank was higher than I thought!”

Dignity resumed!

Travel Theme: Flow

Ailsa from ‘Where’s my backpack’ has set Flow as the travel theme this week.

Here’s the link to her blog…

http://wheresmybackpack.com/2013/06/14/travel-theme-flow/

Walking along the canal today I came across some baby moorhens who were climbing about on a part submerged tree.

"People are often shocked by my feet, because they are very large. But here on the canal they help me hold on to a tree when faced with a barge!" sang Marcus Moorhen gustily!

“People are often shocked by my feet, because they are very large. But here on the canal they help me hold on, to a tree when faced with a barge!” sang Marcus Moorhen gustily!

"And now I'm feeling sleepy, my eyelids are starting to close. I'd better get back to the water and swim for a while I suppose!" crooned Marcus!

“And now I’m feeling sleepy, my eyelids are starting to close. I’d better get back to the water, and swim for a while I suppose!” crooned Marcus!

So down the branch he went…..

"Tum te Tum....Here I come!"

“Tum te Tum….Here I come!”

"Sniff the tree, hee hee hee!"

“Sniff the tree, hee hee hee!”

"Ready to leap, chirrup chirrup cheep!"

“Ready to leap, chirrup chirrup cheep!”

"Shall I go with the flow? Nah I don't think so!" deliberated Marcus!

“Shall I go with the flow? Nah I don’t think so!” said Marcus on feeling the cold chill of the canal!

Well he did eventually get in the water!

Well he did eventually get in the water!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Forward

The Moorhen is Moving Forward…..

Maureen Moorhen knew she should wear her shoe inserts to correct her knock knees but quite frankly, she couldn't be bothered!

Something caught Maureen's eye.....

She was off-racing towards what she had seen....

She soon whizzed past Doris Duck….

"Get out of the way Doris!" shouted Maureen in a most unladylike way!

What was it that had caught Maureen’s eye?

I'm not sure but Dave Duck with the watery chest seems in hot pursuit too!

I think it’s her mate Mike coming home from a long day!

"Maureen, Maureen.....where's me tea?" said Mike much to Maureen's disappointment!

“Maureen, Maureen…..
where’s me tea?” said Mike much to Maureen’s disappointment!

But just to finish now (as I’m tired…what with the dark side and all (teaching that is!)) here’s a gorgeous Tufted Duck….We’ll call him Tureen!

But Whose Feet are These Feet?

There I was, by the canal again, walking and walking with camera at the ready, when who should I encounter?

I wonder if anyone would recognise him just by his feet!

Them's big feet them is!

Them’s big feet them is! But is the beak a give away?

For those of you who read my blog on 24th Jan “A little birdie told me”, you will know that Mr. Round Robin featured in this post and that he was obviously named ‘Round’ due to his stature! Well, I wonder what we should call the owner of these feet as he seems to have the same propensity towards the spherical!

"Hey you...camera woman, I tink it's a little unfair of you to come a creepin' up on me like that and then suggesting I am on the spherical side of life!" cawked (yes I do mean cawked-it's my word and I like it!) Monroe Moorhen tetchily!

“Hey you…camera woman, I think it’s a little unfair of you to come a creepin’ up on me like that and then suggesting I am on the spherical side of life!” cawked (yes I do mean cawked-it’s my word and I like it!) Monroe Moorhen tetchily!

And with that, Monroe stormed off!

"That'll teach her to malign me....now on with the search for those lovely round Kendal mint cakes!" said Monroe.

“That’ll teach her to malign me….now on with the search for those lovely round Kendal mint cakes!” said Monroe.

I wasn’t sure whether or not to help Monroe as he seemed to not see the mint cake so close to his beak!

"It must be round here somewhere!" said Monroe in a rather irritated way!

“It must be round here somewhere!” said Monroe in a rather irritated way! “I knew I should have brought my glasses!”

He looked and looked….

"Maybe it's under this leaf?" said Monroe in a hopeful sort of way!

“Maybe it’s under this leaf?” said Monroe in a hopeful sort of way!

In the end he shouted to his partner Marilyn who didn’t know and didn’t care about the location of the mint cake!

"Marilyn, Marilyn, where did you say you saw it?" shouted Monroe.

“Marilyn, Marilyn, where did you say you saw it?” shouted Monroe.

It was no good, no matter how hard Monroe looked he just could not find the mint cake and decided that he and Marilyn would have to put up with grass for their tea instead that evening!

"Um yum!" said Monroe in a completely nonplussed way!

“Um yum!” said Monroe in a completely nonplussed way!
