Ladybird Ladybird Fly Away Home…..”Not now,” said the Ladybird, “I’m hungry!”

Here’s Lucinda Ladybird  (Ladybug to any Americans paying attention to me!!).

She's sitting quietly wondering where dinner is!

She’s sitting quietly wondering where dinner is!

Poor old Lucinda Ladybird was very hungry! She wanted some aphids but couldn’t find any!

She looked everywhere!

She looked everywhere!

But could she find any aphids? Could she bolero!! (Personally I don't think she's looking very carefully!)

But could she find any aphids? Could she bolero!!
(Personally I don’t think she’s looking very carefully!)

She decided to go and find her friend Frederick Fly who knew everything and saw everything! AND…if it was something to do with food, he would definitely know how to help her!

"Well," said Frederick, "I think you need to look harder because there are lots around!" "Thank you I will!" said Lucinda politely even though inside she thought Frederick was a bit of a pratt and quite unhelpful!

“Well,” said Frederick, “I think you need to look harder because there are lots around!”
“Thank you I will!” said Lucinda turning politely even though inside she thought Frederick was a bit of a prat and quite unhelpful!

So off she went with just a little hope in her heart and a little hole in her tummy!

"They must be round here somewhere!" said Lucinda to herself, "I can smell them!"

“They must be round here somewhere!” said Lucinda to herself, “I can smell them!”

Will Lucinda find some aphids for dinner?

Why was Frederick so unhelpful?

Why are the aphids eating my lupins?

Is her home really on fire?

Come back tomorrow to see what happens next!

OY!!! GET OFF MY LUPINS!!!

Now then…one of my first posts on WordPress was about lupins. It told of, firstly, my love of the dear and lovely lupin. It then told of the rashness of trying to split one in two!! Sad dying lupin days!

Now I have some rather nice and quite well established ones (that I haven’t tried to split!) which are coming into flower.

‘HORRORS!’ I screamed when taking a close inspection….for there, in bright green cheek, was a colony of flaming aphids!

Okey dokey…out with the camera and just look at the little blighters….

See my perfect beginnings of lupin.....

See my perfect beginnings of lupin…......and see those rather ugly, yet somehow fascinating aphids!….and see those rather ugly, yet somehow fascinating aphids!

Look a little closer…..can you see those strange stumps sticking out of their backs?

LOOK!

LOOK!

One aphid website (yes, there is such a place!!) said these were called 'Siphunculus'!

One aphid website (yes, there is such a place!!) said these were called ‘Siphunculus’!

Another site (yes, there was another site!!) said they were 'cornicles'....

Another site (yes, there was another site!!) said they were ‘cornicles’….

...but whatever they are called apparently they secret (such a rude word!) defensive fluid!

…but whatever they are called apparently they secrete (such a rude word!) defensive fluid!

So they are the ones with no wings, but a few DO have wings and, yes, you’ve guessed it, there were some of those as well!

See him?

See him?

This is how my lupins should be looking…

No blemish or insect in sight!

No blemish or insect in sight!

And look at the colour it's going to be...so pretty!

And look at the colour it’s going to be…so pretty!

However, all I’m going to say is, soon they will be no more!

(The evil cackle was heard ringing through the wilds of Bedfordshire as the mad and possessive  crazy woman did some ecologically unfriendly spraying!!)

Lupin update and news from the sea monkeys (May 15th)

Now, I wrote in some detail about the probable sad demise of my lupin. But wait, what did I spot in my garden today?? Well look at the following photo and you will see!!

Look at that thrusting prong of Lupin!

So, there seems to be something going on. Could the internet be wrong in its assertion that Lupins Cannot Be Divided?? I jolly well hope so for three lupins from two is saving me money whilst increasing my pleasure, which is never a bad thing!

But on to the sea monkeys. Why do I have them? Well I’m looking after them for travelling youngsters who were out of the country for 2 months on an Indian excursion. They have been back since March and I am becoming suspicious that the sea monkeys do not mean a lot to them. Here’s what they look like:

Many and prolific little blighters!

They are odd, they do not look like monkeys and quite frankly they do not do much.

On the lupin count I am hopeful.

On the sea monkey count I am not!
