Weekly Photo Challenge: Grid

This week we have been asked to make a grid the centrepiece of our photos.

Meet Sputnik Spider-a bold and brave fellow!

Sputnik Spider had worked hard all his life-constantly trying to find the best and most ingenious design for his webs. He had heard of the latest new fangled ideas of webs based on a 'grid'. Oh yes, he was pleased with the result and declared "Oh yes, I am pleased with this result!"

Sputnik Spider had worked hard all his life-constantly trying to find the best and most ingenious design for his webs. He had heard of the latest new fangled ideas of webs based on a ‘grid’. Oh yes, he was pleased with the result and declared “Oh yes, I am pleased with the result! I shall call it Gridweb mark 1”

What Sputnik Spider hadn’t bargained on was the weather! Imagine his horror upon awakening the next morning to find his Gridweb destroyed by an area of depression which had caused low atmospheric pressure which in turn had caused it to rain!

Look!

Oh dear, barely any of his Gridweb left at all!

Oh dear…….

Oh dear…….

….dearie dearie me!

Sputnik Spider was no slacker fortunately and he was soon back in action on his Gridweb mark 2!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Connected 3

These were taken early in the morning and the spider is covered with dew…in fact you could say that it was a ‘misty moisty morning’ but I didn’t meet an old man clothed all in leather!!

Definitely a ‘Connected’ spider!

By the way, this little beauty is a 4 Spot Orb Weaver Spider!

I Spied ‘Er Beside a Path!

May I introduce you to Cressida Cross Spider!

Here's Cressida Cross Spider trying to enjoy her dinner.

Here’s she is  trying to enjoy her dinner.

And here she is after my bungled attempts to get another close up on her web! Cressida Cross Spider is trying to camouflage herself amongst the seed pods of a wild geranium!

You will quickly see that it’s not her temperament that gives her her name (though heaven knows I’d be ratty if someone interrupted my dinner!).

Here’s Christine Cross Spider!

Christine Cross Spider is also trying to enjoy a meal!

Christine has quite a lot to learn about camouflage though her 'peekaboo' skills are quite good!

So it’s goodbye from both Chris Cross and Cress Cross Spider!!

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Lines to Patterns 3

So my other two sets of photos for this challenge have all been about my garden spiders and the lines of their webs and the patterns on their bodies.

I can’t miss out my last few photos as I rather like them!

Meet Spidrina Garden Spider……

Spidrina's back pattern is slightly different from the other two but I have to say she gets no less stroppy with the camera being thrust rather too close on occasion than the other two!

Stroppy enough, I might add, to retreat to an anemone bud for cover! (It didn’t work as you will see!)

"Surely she won't see me here!" said Spidrina somewhat innocently!

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Lines to Patterns 2

It must be a good year for a sort of spider which is called Garden spider or Cross Spider!

I know I made one cross today when I stuck my lens within 5 mm of her! ( I know it’s a ‘her’ because it is apparently the females that are found upside down in the centre of their webs!)

See what I mean?

See what I mean?

Now some of you may have seen my post yesterday which also featured a garden spider but that was the ‘Lower Garden by the Back Door’ Spider and todays is the ‘Upper Garden by the Shed’ Spider!

I love the pattern on her back….

So here’s another photo of her!

IMG_7066

And the last one of my ‘Upper Garden by the Shed’ Spider is one of her underside (cheeky!)!

There's my shed in the background!!

There’s my shed in the background!!

If you look carefully you can actually see her pedipalps!!!!!

Oh ok….pedipalps are a pair of variously adapted appendages between the jaws and first walking legs of spiders!

That’s All for my version of ‘From Lines to Patterns’ for today!

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Lines to Patterns

Living just outside my back door is a rather enormous spider. I have already featured her on a previous post capturing and devouring a butterfly.

I have had a lot of trouble getting a good photo because the part of my house where she lives is white and this doesn’t seem to work well with a good pic!

Anyway, she was back today and in her web was a ladybird-I love Spellina the Spider…but really….a lovely ladybird!

"Damn!" exclaimed Spotty Spider, "she's back and I', in the middle of my ladybird lunch!"

“Damn!” exclaimed Spellina Spider, “she’s back and I’m in the middle of my ladybird lunch!”

"What the heck is she doing now? Why is she reversing down that step?" questioned Spotty.

“What the heck is she doing now? Why is she reversing down that step?” questioned Spellina.

"Time for a quick getaway...up we go!"

“Time for a quick getaway…up we go!”

"Here and her camera angles!" sighed Spotty Spider!

“Her and her camera angles!” sighed Spellina Spider!

She decided to curl up small to see if this would deter that crazy photographer woman into not bothering!

Finally she went on to the wall.

Finally she went on to the wall.

Isn’t she beautiful….just look at that pattern!

Thursday’s Special: I Spider on my Clematis (so I took a photo or two!!)

Sadly, I accidentally walked straight through Susie Spider’s web, which rather nicely gave me a photo opportunity!

Voilà….

"Does that woman with the camera not have any idea how long it took me to make that web right across her path?" snarled a somewhat angry Susie Spider!

"Still," she continued, "I think I can salvage some of my web and rebuild it!"

"If she gets that lens any closer I hate to think what will feature in her photo!" said Susie showing a slightly shy side to her personality!

“If she gets that lens any closer I hate to think what will feature in her photo!” said Susie showing a slightly shy side to her personality whilst worrying if her bum looked a little big from that angle!

Susie took a leap and swung from the clematis seed head and found herself hanging by a thread that she had created from her very own bottom  spinneret!

"Oops...upside down!: said Susie Spider stating the obvious!

"Wahhhhhheyyyyy!" shouted Susie as the wind spun her sideways!

And that’s my Thursday’s Special.

“Would You Step into my Parlour?” said Spider to Butterfly…..A Tragic Tale!

I love spiders and I love butterflies…but just look at what happened outside my back door!

What sly and beckoning words must that spider have uttered to entice this poor butterfly in?

Is It Something I Said?

Whilst perusing my photographs I suddenly noticed how many of the creatures I photograph are totally ignoring me!!

Well, have a look and see if I’m right!

"Ducks...listen to me...ignore mad camera woman and she'll soon go away!" hissed Suzuki Swan!

"The only thing to do now is RUN even if it doesn't work in water....RUN Christine RUN!" screeched Corinne the moment she espied the camera!

"Hey Geraint," quacked Des, "Put your head under your wing like me... that'll spoil her shot!"

And that’s only the water birds!

Look it continues…..

"Eat my shorts!" said Randy as he turned on his heels and left!

"I shall be glad when this snow has gone and look white once again!" sighed Perry. "Shhh! she's back again...look the other way and look casual!" neighed Pint-size!

Fortunately some creatures are not so unkind!

Special Photo Challenge: Inspiration

What inspires me to write a blog is definitely nature and it has the most immense pull on me. I knew I wanted to go out today to find images for my next post, but for those of you who are not in the UK, I had better let you know about our weather at the moment. I believe you would call it blustery at the very least! Very strong winds indeed! And to demonstrate this, here’s a photo of me, taken by me in the fields behind my house!

My beloved hat that I bought in Australia has never flown off before….well before today!

I’d now like to show a selection of images that inspire and delight me, that make me always carry my camera and which fill me with excitement when downloading to my computer.

A beautiful poppy seed head adorned with a cobweb and morning dew.

A spider on his web in my garden…

Then there’s the humour of a horse taking part in Movember!!! (I have already published this but it’s very amusing!)

Marvellous moustache!

Generally, fungus fascinates me…

Fabulous Fungi

Then, of course, there are just beautiful flowers!

Often the beauty of something close up is amazing…

So there you have it, just some of the things that inspire me!

That’s all!
