Weekly Photo Challenge: Change

This caterpillar he climbed so high

Half way up my back wall

And then he stopped and looked about

I hoped he wouldn’t fall

IMG_4843

For even though the likes of him

Eat up my nasturtiums

I always love the look of them

After their conversions!

(Into butterflies….keep up!)

He started swaying from side to side

It was a curious thing

It was then I saw he was securing himself

With what looked like fine silk string!

IMG_4847

‘Aha,’ I thought as I watched him,

‘He’s preparing to be a cocoon!’

Then just then right at that moment

He performed a dead faint swoon.

I poked him gently-he didn’t move

Perhaps he’d run out of thread

Or maybe he’d just had enough

How sad if he was now dead!

I checked the following morning

He hadn’t changed at all

He was still a caterpillar

Hanging upon my wall 😦

The next day to my great surprise

My eyes near popped out of my head

For look what had happened at dead of night

No more caterpillar but a chrysalis instead!

I feel this qualifies for the theme of ‘Change!’

Weekly Photo Challenge: Enveloped

In the fields behind my house, where I walk most days, there are many stinging nettles on the path side. On one particular day I noticed that the top of the nettle had something all around it….you could say ‘enveloped‘ by a web looking thing (technical jargon I know, but I think you understand!).

"Oh," I thought, "I remember…small tortoiseshell butterflies lay their eggs on nettles…."

“Oh,” I thought, “I remember…small tortoiseshell butterflies lay their eggs on nettles….”

In a few days this happens…..

They start to grow….

And here’s what the adult small tortoiseshell looks like….

Weekly Photo Challenge: Room 2

My first two photos are under title of…

“I’m sorry  but we have no room!”

Here they are, making their way to their rooms!

Oh dear….not much room at all!

And these three photos are under the title of….

“Hop on board, there’s room on top!!”

Weekly Photo Challenge: Juxtaposition

An unlikely pairing?……

"Whoa, slow down big boy!" said Carl Caterpillar, "You'll have me on the floor at that speed!"

"That's better, nearly my stop and I'll be off! Thanks Selina Snail!" shouted Carl Caterpillar!

A Word A Week Challenge: Pose

Here’s a little chap I met this summer who was certainly up for a pose!

It didn't take much encouragement to get Gordon Grey Dagger to get on the table once he realised there was a camera and possible fame on a blog!!

With a little encouragement……

"Hold it a bit lower!" ordered Gordon Grey Dagger in a slightly irritated way!

So I held the leaf a bit lower!

Ah Gordon, the perfect pose, showing you on your best side and with ample light to show your true beauty!

In case you hadn’t realised, this rather lovely caterpillar will grow into a Grey Dagger moth!!

Caterpillar Carnage!

Whilst out looking for things to scrump (countryside pilfering!) and discovering that the local damsons need another week to ripen, I spotted some very forlorn looking leaves. Well, they weren’t so much leaves as leaf stalks!

Yes….some cabbage white caterpillars had found a home in the foliage and then focused on their eating!

Regard……

The large family Cabbagium Cabbagious-aka The Cabbage-Whites-were out for the day. They left at 9 o' clock prompt!

As usual, young Claudius Cabbage-White couldn't concentrate and decided to indulge in acrobatics!

Of course, Claudius fell off the leaf! Well I can't see him!

Of course, Claudius fell off the leaf-right down to the bottom of the plant!

So, down the Family Cabbage-White went in search of poor young Claudius!

PS I do, of course, know that caterpillars can’t be mummies and daddies to each other…it’s just poetic licence!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Curves 2

Just look at these peacock butterfly caterpillars….

There isn’t anything straight about them…..

They’re all curves!

Colour bright within my sight!

“Oh you’re so easily!” distracted came the slightly exasperated cry.

We are at the allotment planning and measuring for beds but I have spotted some photo opportunities which lure me away with their promise of colour and excitement!

Somehow measuring beds of 5m x 1.2m is just not as exciting as….

Almost hurts your eyes!

(Are you remembering to hover over the pictures?)

Then there’s this little lovely…..

Fabulous colours!

And even closer still…

Aw Charlie, you’re magnificent!

Let’s move on to a different colour now….

Do you think she’s vein!!!! Geddit?

And the final one…

Such yummy colours!

And just in case you didn’t realise, these are all photos of Chard!

Have you guessed what it is yet?

Tell me your name oh hairy one!

I found this little beauty in my front garden, calmly climbing on a shrub. I have to admit that I have been a little cross with the behaviour of this year’s caterpillars as they have eaten my garden alive! However I am unable to hurt them so I just try to move them somewhere else (like the neighbours garden??? No not really!).

Anyway, I decided I needed to know what species it is…butterfly or moth??

Well, God bless the internet as I can now proudly reveal that this caterpillar will become a Grey Dagger moth. I haven’t a photo of my own of one of them but I have managed to find this on t’net.

Grey Dagger Moth

Here’s a glorious sweet pea, bursting and ready and so pleased to not be caterpillar food….

Sweet sweet pea

And now, with great subtlety, on to another sort of pea that I podded only last week. Couldn’t resist the photo opportunity!

Yum!
