Weekly Photo Challenge: Enveloped

In the fields behind my house, where I walk most days, there are many stinging nettles on the path side. On one particular day I noticed that the top of the nettle had something all around it….you could say ‘enveloped‘ by a web looking thing (technical jargon I know, but I think you understand!).

"Oh," I thought, "I remember…small tortoiseshell butterflies lay their eggs on nettles…."

“Oh,” I thought, “I remember…small tortoiseshell butterflies lay their eggs on nettles….”

In a few days this happens…..

In a few days this happens…..

They start to grow….

They start to grow….

and grow.

and grow.

And here’s what the adult small tortoiseshell looks like….

  1. Ew, gross. Not your photos, of course. Much as I loved caterpillars as a child, I always found cocoons covered in them to be gross, and as an adult, I find them even more so. I’m sure a Freudian could explain, but I don’t want to know (which I’m sure a Freudian could explain, as well). Bleah!!

Thank you for that last photo, to soothe my burning eyes.
    😉

    • Glad something soothed your poor eyes. They are definitely most beautiful once butterflied! I find the masses of caterpillars hard to look away from yet slightly disgusting too! 😉

Go on.....say something to me! You know you want to! Dot knows you want to too!
