Come Fly with Me, Let’s Fly, Let’s Fly Away!!

Once more at the canal…..

When who should I espy????

“Well hello Mr. Mesembrina Meridiana, how wonderfully orange and black you look!” said I!

Mr. M.M is sometimes known as the noon fly.

Mr. M.M is sometimes known as the noon fly.

Oh but they do some yeuchy stuff these flies!

Adults are most often seen on cow dung, basking in open ground or visiting flowers to feed upon nectar.

Eggs are laid in cow dung. (What a start to life these baby flies have!)

IMG_7231

Mind you…the larvae are carnivorous and feed on other fly larvae within the dung!

"I've got my eye on you Madam!" said Mr. M.M. slightly unpleasantly!

I got this information off the internet and apparently there are people who write about “Insects of the British Cow Dung Community”!!! What??????

I can't help but think he's rather handsome despite his unpleasant habits!

Whose Curly Bottom Is That Curly Bottom???

IMG_7302

Out on walk with my mother we saw this fine fellow…a cygnus atratus I believe!

The black swan’s scientific name means ‘a swan attired in black’….makes sense I suppose!

“Good day!” I said to him, knowing that he comes from Australia!

"I say, are you talking to me young lady?" came his reply in a broad posh accent!

“I say, are you talking to me young lady?” came his reply in a broad posh accent!

I continued with my chit chat….

“Did you come here in a wedge and where’s your bank?”

He eyed me suspiciously! I heard him whisper "Who is this woman who can speak swan?"

He eyed me suspiciously! I heard him whisper “Who is this woman who can speak swan?”

And with that he struck a pose, almost as if he didn’t know what else to do. Oh by the way……

When in flight, a group of black swans is known as a ‘wedge’, whereas on the ground it is known as a ‘bank’.

"Hmmm I bet she doesn't know that we are the state emblem of Western Australia, and we appear on the state flag." he said to himself a little anxiously!

And with that he swam off to find some other bank members!

And with that he swam off to find some other bank members!

As he swam off, I waved this flag at him…this seemed to really scare him!

But look who he brought back with him…..

"Oh!" said HSBC Swan to Santander Swan and Barclay Swan, "She really does speak swan!"

“Oh!” said HSBC Swan to Santander Swan and Barclay Swan, “She really does speak swan!”

I moved off as I felt sure they were about to make a variety of high-pitched, musical baying, bugling and trumpeting calls.

How right I was as the cacophony began!

What a lovely meeting it was and look how much you must have all learned about Black Swans!

Thursday’s Special!

We planted these dahlias a little late and have been willing them to burst into flower before autumn fully descends. The rest of our dahlias are out and have been giving us pleasure for quite a while now.

But, these, I think, are worth the wait…..

What Splendina Sparrow Saw!

Splendina Sparrow took a rest on a young tree by the canal. She looked over at the field and she could hardly believe her eyes when she saw the antics of the herd of cows in there!

"Oh me oh my!' tweeted Splendina, "Just look at Big Bernie Bull asleep on the job in a field of cows!"

“Oh me oh my!’ tweeted Splendina, “Just look at Big Bernie Bull asleep on the job in a field of cows!”

Certainly looks like Splendina is right!

"For your information," said Bernie with some irritation, "I am not asleep, I've had a busy day and I'm resting my eyes Splendina! So go chirrup somewhere else!"

“For your information,” said Bernie with some irritation, “I am not asleep, I’ve had a busy day and I’m resting my eyes Splendina! So go chirrup somewhere else!”

Perhaps a little unnecessarily rude Bernie!!

Meanwhile, noted Splendina, Cowleen Cow was having a right load of hassle with her twins…..

Bouncer Bullock just loved the nursery rhyme Hey diddle diddle and only wanted to practise jumping over the moon, morning, noon and night!

Cowlette and Cowaline couldn't help but laugh even though Cowlette really needed to be milked and sitting was getting uncomfortable!

Meanwhile, Big Bernie Bull decided to take the weight off his feet and practise his scowling!!

"I've had better days!" said Bernie to no one in particular!

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Lines to Patterns 3

So my other two sets of photos for this challenge have all been about my garden spiders and the lines of their webs and the patterns on their bodies.

I can’t miss out my last few photos as I rather like them!

Meet Spidrina Garden Spider……

Spidrina's back pattern is slightly different from the other two but I have to say she gets no less stroppy with the camera being thrust rather too close on occasion than the other two!

Stroppy enough, I might add, to retreat to an anemone bud for cover! (It didn’t work as you will see!)

"Surely she won't see me here!" said Spidrina somewhat innocently!

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Lines to Patterns 2

It must be a good year for a sort of spider which is called Garden spider or Cross Spider!

I know I made one cross today when I stuck my lens within 5 mm of her! ( I know it’s a ‘her’ because it is apparently the females that are found upside down in the centre of their webs!)

See what I mean?

See what I mean?

Now some of you may have seen my post yesterday which also featured a garden spider but that was the ‘Lower Garden by the Back Door’ Spider and todays is the ‘Upper Garden by the Shed’ Spider!

I love the pattern on her back….

So here’s another photo of her!

IMG_7066

And the last one of my ‘Upper Garden by the Shed’ Spider is one of her underside (cheeky!)!

There's my shed in the background!!

There’s my shed in the background!!

If you look carefully you can actually see her pedipalps!!!!!

Oh ok….pedipalps are a pair of variously adapted appendages between the jaws and first walking legs of spiders!

That’s All for my version of ‘From Lines to Patterns’ for today!

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Lines to Patterns

Living just outside my back door is a rather enormous spider. I have already featured her on a previous post capturing and devouring a butterfly.

I have had a lot of trouble getting a good photo because the part of my house where she lives is white and this doesn’t seem to work well with a good pic!

Anyway, she was back today and in her web was a ladybird-I love Spellina the Spider…but really….a lovely ladybird!

"Damn!" exclaimed Spotty Spider, "she's back and I', in the middle of my ladybird lunch!"

“Damn!” exclaimed Spellina Spider, “she’s back and I’m in the middle of my ladybird lunch!”

"What the heck is she doing now? Why is she reversing down that step?" questioned Spotty.

“What the heck is she doing now? Why is she reversing down that step?” questioned Spellina.

"Time for a quick getaway...up we go!"

“Time for a quick getaway…up we go!”

"Here and her camera angles!" sighed Spotty Spider!

“Her and her camera angles!” sighed Spellina Spider!

She decided to curl up small to see if this would deter that crazy photographer woman into not bothering!

Finally she went on to the wall.

Finally she went on to the wall.

Isn’t she beautiful….just look at that pattern!

Thursday’s Special: I Spider on my Clematis (so I took a photo or two!!)

Sadly, I accidentally walked straight through Susie Spider’s web, which rather nicely gave me a photo opportunity!

Voilà….

"Does that woman with the camera not have any idea how long it took me to make that web right across her path?" snarled a somewhat angry Susie Spider!

"Still," she continued, "I think I can salvage some of my web and rebuild it!"

"If she gets that lens any closer I hate to think what will feature in her photo!" said Susie showing a slightly shy side to her personality!

“If she gets that lens any closer I hate to think what will feature in her photo!” said Susie showing a slightly shy side to her personality whilst worrying if her bum looked a little big from that angle!

Susie took a leap and swung from the clematis seed head and found herself hanging by a thread that she had created from her very own bottom  spinneret!

"Oops...upside down!: said Susie Spider stating the obvious!

“Oops…upside down!: said Susie Spider stating the obvious!

"Wahhhhhheyyyyy!" shouted Susie as the wind spun her sideways!
