Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting 3

“Well,” I thought to myself, “What could be more fleeting than the life of the poor Mayfly??”

Look….

Here's one, Maureen Mayfly, who has landed, exhausted on some rather pretty foliage!

Here’s one, Marvin Mayfly, who has landed exhausted on some rather pretty foliage!

Now, you may wonder how I know he’s a male mayfly (apart from his name of course!)…but I know because he has really big eyes and his front legs are  long! That’s what the boy mayflies look like! They need their eyes and their arms like that so that they can locate and hold on to the female mayflies easily!

They swarm on a few days in…yes, you’ve guessed…..May!

They dash around, having emerged from the river, all of a dither in a desperate rush to find a partner and mate!

After all, some of them only have an hour before they kark it!

Not a long life you see, well the airbourne life isn’t long, apparently as they can live in the ‘naiad’ phase under water for several months!

Here’s another tired out mayfly…

Yes, look at the eyes, it's definitely Morgan Mayfly!

Now I don’t want to seem like too much of an expert, but this is definitely a lady mayfly! Small eyes and short front legs!

Another interesting fact:

Their mouth parts are vestigial as they only need to mate! (I wish my mouth parts were vestigial sometimes!)

and….

Their digestive system is filled with air! (So is mine sometimes, though sadly it’s mostly filled with food!)

This next chappie has decided to rest upon my friend….

Now he really is a boy, Morgan Mayfly I think...just look at the length of his arms and the size of his eyes!!

That’s All!

See Ya xx
